The most common question I've been since I've been back in the states is WHAT HAPPENED?
So, here is the answer to that question, though I'm sure it won't satisfy the masses:
Nothing. Absolutely nothing "happened."
I did a lot of soul-searching. A lot of contemplation about my next steps in my career, and made some major plans and life goals that I probably wouldn't have otherwise.
While I was in Korea, I had a lot of down time. Not FREE time. Down time. Where I was tied to a desk for HOURS, literally. So I had waaay too much time to think, and not enough time to DO. I worked 9-5 and walked 1.5 miles to the school, so I was in bed pretty early, and left at least 40 minutes early for work every day. That left little time to actually ACT on anything. I guess that's what happened. I realized I'm a DOer. I like to get things DONE, and everything I wanted to do was IN THE STATES:
*I wanted to teach ELA ( I've wanted to do that since high school)
*I wanted to build and maintain authentic friendships
*I wanted to continue working for FIT( the boot camp company)
*I wanted to be able to exercise all of my talents and utilize all of my creative energy. See below:
*I wanted to grow as a HUMAN being in the world that was home---there are some really stifling things about Korea. If you're hyper aware like myself, or just as stubborn, you can see how a semester is just enough to give you the push you need to do what you REALLY want to do. In a nutshell. I am FREE . Free to choose to or not to go to work. Free to choose whether or not I want to continue with a career or change careers. Free to have an opinion without worrying what other people think( although sometimes, it seems like that's not the case). Free to work three different jobs if I want to.
I had no interest in ever becoming a career EFL teacher. I was after an experience, and I definitely got it. At some point, you peak, right? I basically had learned all I thought I wanted/needed to learn, and I also NEEDED a job for the FALL. It would have been very foolish of me to return in say, June or July, and request interviews with districts that had been on the hunt in March. ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN. THAT was my plan.
This is WAAAAY too much to write, and extremely boring. So I'm going to END it here. :-). My next post is..what have I done in the 3.5 weeks I've been home. Tootles!!!
