OK, so I lied. I am my hair, but this post is really not about me at all. It's about the fact that 65% of my students grades 3-5, have dyed hair or permed hair. My 9-year old students have red or purple or brown hair, and sometime they even have perms! I've seen students in the states with temporary spray-dye or Halloween costumes accompanied with crazy colored hair, but there is NO way that is generally acceptable.
I think the emphasis on "looks" in Korea is very prominent, more so for women or females than for men. Then again, several of my male students have the typical light brown dye as well.Earlier this year, when I taught a sample lesson at the middle school level, many of the girls were adjusting and reapplying makeup during class, and that was completely acceptable.
My question is....what is the deal with the dyed hair? I don't know if these kids have asked to have their hair colored or permed, or if it's a parental preference...
Random Thought of the Day.
